Would you like to discover new surroundings as a brand-new family? And would you like the feeling of 'really getting away for a while', without having to travel for very long? Texel is the ideal destination for your first family holiday.
Read our tips for Texel with a newborn here. The tips are very suitable for children from 0 to at least 2 years old.
20 minutes by ferry
From Amsterdam, it is a one-hour drive to the ferry port in Den Helder. There, the ferry to Texel leaves every hour. The crossing takes twenty minutes. During the crossing, you can stay in the car and also sit in the saloon. The toilets on the boat have a changing area.
Touching sheep and cuddling lambs
At Schapenboerderij Texel, you can buy tickets to walk around the farmyard. You can take a look in the sheepfold with newborn lambs and stroke them and sometimes take them on your lap. The farmyard also has chickens, dwarf goats, pigs, as well as guinea pigs and ponies. The farm is equipped for visitors, so you can get everywhere in normal shoes and with a pram.
Relaxed eating and drinking
Beach pavilions are ideal to go to with a young baby. There is a relaxed atmosphere and you can also leave the table in a moment if your baby needs it. Having a drink and dinner overlooking the sea is, of course, gold. Bries20 has a microwave in the toilet area, where you can heat up a bottle or baby snack yourself.
Baby-proof children's menus Is your child ready for their own plate at the table? These restaurants have fine children's menus with healthy choices (and a high chair available, of course): Catharinahoeve, Kaap Noord and Quinty's.
For babies, Beauty Outline offers a float session. In the special jacuzzi, the baby can enjoy floating. A baby massage is also possible. Beauty Outline is a 5-minute walk from our location.
How nice: a holiday spot where you can walk to the supermarket, find fine nature nearby for a walk and from where you can easily see highlights. Our holiday homes in De Koog are 5 minutes' walk from supermarkets, shops and restaurants, the forest is around the corner and via the dunes you can walk to the beach in 10 minutes.
Walking routes suitable for a pram
Take a nice walk during the naps? You can do that very well in our area. Around the corner starts the cycle path network, where you are guaranteed a good and solid surface to walk on anyway. The forest has a paved and wide path. You can start there and walk to the Zeereeppad, for instance, which is a paved path on top of the dunes, from where you have a view over the beach and the sea. And further fun:
The Alloo Family Path goes through the southern forest and dune area of De Koog. The path is paved and suitable for prams and wheelchairs. The route is 4.4 km long and can also be shortened to 2.7 km.
In the forest De Dennen there are wide forest paths with a firm surface (see photo), you can walk there very well with a pram.
Fancy learning a bit more about the island and its culture? The beachcomber museum is super fun. And very suitable with a newborn. That's because the museum consists of all kinds of barns, connected via outdoor areas. If your baby starts crying or needs feeding, you can walk right out of the barn and take a stroll in the outdoor area or find a quiet spot.
After all, you are on holiday, so on arrival your bed will already be made. You can also rent a baby cot, which will also be made up on arrival.
Is the 4 pm check-in time not ideal for you? We also have an early check-in (subject to availability), which allows you to check in at 12 or 2 pm. The same applies to the 10 am check-out time: on request, a lazy check-outuntil 11 or 12 am is also possible.
Enjoy bobbing, playing in the wading pool orbubbling in bubble pool. You can do that at these swimming pools:
Swimming pool Opduin: a clear a quiet pool, with bubble bath and children's pool.
Swimming pool Calluna: a large swimming pool where young and old can enjoy themselves. With a slide, bubble baths, children's pool and swimming lanes.
Swimming pool De Krim: modern swimming pool with all kinds of entertainment. On weekends and holidays it can be busy here, around that time it is a quiet pool.
No need for an overstuffed car ;-)
Texel is not an uninhabited island. And that's nice. Don't worry about running out of nappies or rompers: the island has several shops selling children's clothes and the well-known drugstores are here too. There are several GP practices and a pharmacy on the island. Addresses and phone numbers of emergency services >
Especially in summer, the beach sand can be quite loose for a pram. A baby carrier is then ideal. Without pushing the pushchair, you can easily walk a few kilometres along the sea. In colder periods, you can certainly do this too, if you wear the baby carrier under your winter coat. Need to unwind? Along the beach you will find a beach pavilion every few kilometres for a delicious snack and drink.
Could you use a good night too? Our holiday homes have lovely AVEK box-spring beds. Are you bringing a cot with you or would you like to rent one? Check in advance whether the holiday home you are looking at has room for one in the bedroom. On this page you can read about the holiday homes in which this fits >
Local ingredients for healthy snacks
Is your baby ready for its first snacks or a small meal? A fun challenge: letting them taste new flavours; grown or produced on Texel. These farm shops are fun to visit and have a delicious range:
Novalishoeve: organic vegetables and dairy, sourdough bread and biscuits.
De Waelde Tuin: fruit, nuts and fruit juice from its own orchard.
Playing in the biggest sandbox
Texel's North Sea beach is 30 kilometres long and freely accessible. Crawling through the sand, playing with a shovel, running to the sea and, in summer, paddling in the ponds. If that's not a lovely big sandpit ;-)
At the Vakantie Speelgoedbox, you can rent all kinds of toy boxes. This way, you can introduce your baby to different toys on holiday. And ideal: you can hire essentials such as a bouncer, changing table, nappy bin, etc. That saves space in the car.
In dunes of De Koog is Ecomare; best known as the seal sanctuary. Did you know they also have a large room with aquariums? Babies often love this. At eye level, small children can marvel at the fish swimming by, lights and bells in the water. Opening hours and more info >
Beach house rental for nap time
Would you like to enjoy the Texel beach on a summer's day, without dragging along a tent or parasol? Then a beach house is ideal. Your child can sleep inside in the shade and out of the wind. From mid-April to mid-September, the photogenic beach huts are located at the various Texel beaches. Most are rented out for the entire season, but there are often a few cottages that can also be rented out for a day or a week.
Playgrounds
For slightly older babies, the playgrounds in De Koog are great fun to go to. Have a nice time outdoors crawling, climbing and sliding down the slide.
Still a little quicker than expected due to the rompers, bedding or bibs? No problem. Our guests can use the laundry service. For €5 per drum, we wash and dry it at the desired temperature. Ecological detergent is used.
A cosy and comfortable holiday home
The advantage of going on holiday with a newborn is that you don't necessarily have to pick a kid-proof cottage yet. If you have a good time, so will your baby. For naps, a living room with a comfortable sofa is nice and in summer you'll want a nice terrace. Have you seen our houses yet? We often host young parents having a great first family holiday.
